The legend of Vermont

“Pale, downy, and patient, he keeps to the gorge above Northfield. The locals could point you to the Devil's Washbowl. Mostly, they'd rather you didn't go.”

Northfield, Vermont, is a tidy college town folded into the Green Mountains, with hayfields and church steeples and, just outside the lights, a steep wooded gorge the locals call the Devil's Washbowl. Up in those rocks and back along the dark dirt roads lives the Pigman — a hunched figure, five or six feet tall, covered in pale downy-white hair, with a flat snouted face like a hog's and long talon-like claws where a man's fingers ought to be. He stays back in the timber. He likes it there.

He is not quite man and not quite animal, and the two halves never settle. Drivers catch him in their headlights at the edge of the trees and he is gone before the brake takes hold. He raids the odd farm, gets blamed for missing pigs, and leaves the night feeling watched. The people of Northfield have a long-standing arrangement with him, unwritten but understood: he leaves the town be, and the town, for the most part, leaves him be.

The Legend+

The Pigman is bound up with a real Northfield sorrow. As the story is told, a teenage boy named Sam Harris went out one night in the early autumn — Picket Night, the old pre-Halloween mischief night — and never came home. Search parties combed the hills for him across square miles of forest and found nothing. The town grieved, the case went cold, and the woods kept their silence.

Then the woods gave something back. In the years after, people began to say that Sam Harris had not died out there but had changed — gone wild and strange in the gorge, become the pale, hog-faced thing now glimpsed on the back roads. Whether the Pigman is a transformed boy, a feral hermit, or something that was always up in the Washbowl waiting, Northfield has never agreed. It only agrees that he is there.

Documented Sightings+

The encounter that fixed the legend came in 1971. A group of high-school students drinking behind the school during a dance reported a pale, hairy figure with a pig-like face stepping out of the tree line and standing there, watching them, before melting back into the dark. The story tore through town, and from then on the Pigman had a face — or the absence of a human one — and a reputation.

After 1971 the sightings settled into a pattern locals still recite. Headlight glimpses of a hunched white shape crossing a dirt road. Something pale moving among the cliffs above the Devil's Washbowl. Hog pens disturbed, animals gone, prints that don't read quite right. Nobody gets a long look, and almost nobody goes up into the gorge after dark to try for one — which is, the old-timers will tell you, exactly how everyone prefers it.

The Lore+

Skeptics file the Pigman among the great American teen legends — a campfire creature born of a genuine missing-boy tragedy, dressed up by every senior class that came after to scare the freshmen and keep the underclassmen out of the gorge. The pig's-head detail, the white hair, the claws: classic ingredients of a tale built to be retold and improved on a dark porch in October.

But the Devil's Washbowl is a genuinely lonesome place, all wet rock and deep timber and rushing water, and a steep gorge has a way of keeping a legend alive on its own. Northfield neither hunts the Pigman nor disowns him. He is the town's own shadow, half memory and half monster, and the standing local wisdom is the simplest kind: stay out of the Washbowl after dark, and let whatever lives up there go on living up there.
