The legend of Pennsylvania

“He is the ugliest creature in the woods, and no one knows it better than he does. Follow the trail of tears and you'll find him. Catch him, and you'll find nothing but salt water and bubbles.”

Deep in the hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania lives the most miserable creature ever cataloged in American woods-lore: the Squonk. It is, by every account, hideous — ill-fitting skin two sizes too large, covered in warts, moles, and weeping blemishes, hanging off it in loose, sorry folds. The Squonk is fully aware of this. It spends its entire life in a state of inconsolable grief over its own appearance, and so it weeps, constantly, retreating to the dimmest stands of timber where it can be wretched in private.

It is a harmless thing, and a heartbreaking one. The only practical way to track a Squonk is to follow the trail of tears it leaves glistening on the moss, especially on cold moonlit nights when its sobbing grows worse. But catching it is another matter entirely. A cornered Squonk has one last trick, and it is the saddest in the whole woods: it simply dissolves. The creature melts away into a small pool of its own tears and bubbles, leaving the hunter holding an empty, salty sack and a lesson about the cruelty of pursuit.

The Legend+

The Squonk comes to us from the golden age of the American logging camp, when lumberjacks working the great hemlock and pine stands traded tall tales by the stove to frighten the greenhorns and pass the long nights. Among the 'fearsome critters' they conjured, the Squonk stood out — not for ferocity, but for sheer pathos. It was the homeliest animal in the woods, and it knew it, and it could not stop crying about it.

Its range was always given as the hemlock forests of northern Pennsylvania, specifically, which is unusual precision for a tall-tale beast. The lumbermen said it kept to the densest, darkest cover out of shame, and that on damp nights you could hear it sobbing somewhere off in the timber. Its tears were said to be its undoing and its only defense in one — for when grief or fear overcame it completely, the Squonk would weep itself out of existence.

Documented Sightings+

The Squonk owes its survival to one real and citable source: William T. Cox's Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods, published in 1910, which set down the wildlife of the logging-camp imagination in mock-scientific style. Cox even granted the beast a Latin name — Lacrimacorpus dissolvens, the 'tear-body that dissolves' — and recorded its hemlock-forest habitat and its melancholy habits for posterity.

Cox passed along the era's favorite Squonk anecdote: a hunter named J.P. Wentling supposedly lured a Squonk into a sack by imitating its sobs, and was carrying his prize home when the weight in the bag suddenly lessened and the sobbing stopped. He opened the sack to find only tears and bubbles — the Squonk had dissolved rather than be taken. It is one of the gentlest 'capture' stories in all of American cryptid lore, and one of the few where the monster wins by simply ceasing to be.

The Lore+

No naturalist takes the Squonk for a real animal — it was born as a campfire joke, a way for old hands to gull the new boys in the cutting crews. But it has outlived the logging camps and the giant hemlocks both. The Squonk became a small literary darling, name-checked in poetry and song over the decades, beloved precisely because it is the opposite of a monster: it threatens no one and harms nothing but its own poor heart.

There is a quiet moral folded into the Squonk's tears, the way there usually is in the best woods-lore. It is a creature defined entirely by self-loathing, hunted only by those who would profit from its capture, and granted the bleak mercy of dissolving rather than being possessed. The lumbermen laughed at it. But on a cold night in a dark hemlock stand, with something sobbing softly off in the dark, the joke has a way of catching in the throat.
